EPIC TUESDAYS ARE BACK! Imagine if you will…Kraftwerk decided to pack up their synths, drum machines et al and head down to Nigeria to collaborate with the local popular singers of the 80’s. It’s a tough one to wrap your head around but this nugget of Afro-electro pop will help get you there right quick. William Onyeabor was a fairly well known funk musician in 1970’s Nigeria scoring a few “hits” over the course of that well documented and highly prolific decade. In the 80’s William decided to take a different course. Clearly inspired by the technical achievements of electronic musical equipment makers (Moog, Roland, Linn et al) he holed up in his studio to create a new type of African music. African rhythms and that Nigerian feel can still be heard through his use of almost entirely electronic means but it’s evident that he was also looking to the modern electro sounds coming from the discos and radio of Europe and America for some new inspiration. I’ve been fairly satiated with the glut of African funk, soul and rock reissues over the past few years so when something like this comes along (and I would also recommend Brand New Wayo; a comp of Nigerian disco and boogie from the 80’s) it just stands hairs on the back of my neck. Big up.
The Lp has recently been reissued and is currently available….Tho I hear it’s already sold out and oop at the label….so git quick kids.

I discovered Mandre a little over a year ago. The on-fire Rush Hour label reissued Mandre - 4 in early 2010 and more recently the 12” version of Solar Flight (opus 1)….I immediately purchased both and fell deeply in love with the future funk sound of the man they call Mandre. Flash forward to 2 weeks ago….Fingers and I were up in Gloucester digging for 45s at Mystery Train and I came across a copy of the 7” version of Solar Flight! As stoked as I was I decided to hand it to Fingers and urged him to buy it (since I already owned the 12” etc….I figured I should spread the love). 2 days later I franticly texted him, regretting having not purchased it myself, and asked if he would relinquish said 45….without batting an eye he did. What a gentleman! I realize this is a long preamble to my point….this track is ILL! Synthed-out mutant funk at it’s finest. Motown was smokin’ some shit back then! Mandre is on some spaced-out next level medicine with this one…..a full on galactic work-out complete with zonked space echo and porno guitz. There’s some heavy blow-sessions happening here too. out there man…..dig in.

Sooo, this is a fairly new discovery for me. My pal Jason Willet at The True Vine Shop in Baltimore deserves the credit for turning me on to this slice of pop genius and I’m SO glad he did (if you are in B-more stop in and give him your bidniss). What would life be like WITHOUT Doug Hream Blunt in it? Well, I guess probably the same but certainly a fraction duller. Legend has it that Mr. Blunt recorded this private press diamond in the late 80’s with a band of moderately cute white girls. To witness the band in action you MUST watch this video of the Blunt band on San Francisco public access….phew! I swear this is the sweetest albeit slightly inept sunshine rock to grace these ears in some time….there’s actually not much I can compare it with. Mainly he’s singing about watching some girl walking down the street, enjoying her presumably healthy assets when all of a sudden his Benz breaks down (see said Benz in photo above). Discoveries like this are why I continue to be fascinated with the world of home-spun musical fantasia and more to the point music itself.

Carlton Livingston - 100 Weight of Collie Weed
One for all the smokers out there. Classic 1983 chuuune via Carlton Livingston…talkin’ bout moving big weight. Carlton delivers it hard riding over the Hot Milk riddim. I heard this song once a couple years ago and have had it in and out of my head since then. The vocals are infectious….Carlton reminds me a bit of classic sweet-soul singers like Gregory Isaacs et al….cept with more rugged lyrics. I’ve been trying to track this down on 45 for a while and finally found a reissue version that is slightly different….it’s like a New York re-edit….”100lbs of Collie Weed coming through New York….New York” Anyone know anything about this version? I’ve been having a hard time finding any info about it. Anyway….twist one up and enjoy.

Bloody hell it’s been a while since I hit up the Broblog….sorry for the radio silence…but I hope this makes up for lost time.
RUGGGEDDD riddim from Tony Roach y Callo Collins on the Rythem Track label circa 1985. This one’s got it all…dig those sick piano stabs….merderous beats and synth. Tony be controlling tha area with this one.
Digikiller has just re-issued these 7”s….they’ve been getting a plethora of spins at Brobots nights around Boston….Fingers can attest!
