JORGE BEN - UMBABARAUMA

Just wanted to get this up here in honor of the World Cup.  I’ve been super into creating soundtracks to replace the Vuvuzelas.  Snailboy and I did up a mix that I’ll add a link to once we get it hosted (paging Dr. Fever!), in the mean time this track is one of my all time favorites and fits in with the International soccer vibe I’ve been going for (It’s about an African point man!).  Give a shout if you’ve got any other suggestions in the comments section.

UPDATE:  Apparently doing research beforehand has its benefits - Nike beat me to the punch.

Taggy Matcher - Shimmy Shimmy Ya

Here’s the newest offering in the ongoing effort to force spring through music. Couldn’t decide if Reggae or Hip Hop would be more effective, so I went with both. This is one 45 in a series put out by Taggy Matcher, each one a dancefloor grenade. For how much these two genres have in common, it’s surprising how few times they’ve been successfully combined.  Collect the 45’s or grab Taggy’s new album that compiles them all in one place - Reggae Hip Hop Series Volume 1 - and hop in your whip, pop it in your deck, snap your neck, and witness the fitness!

Miriam Makeba - "Pata Pata"

Oh, man…I was prompted to put this song up here because Snaiboy’s last track reminded me of it.  A funny thing happened along the way though - I learned how amazing the story behind the woman is.  She was married to Hugh Masekela (one of my favorites), cut a record with Harry Belafonte, and was on the Cosby show, not to mention the role she played in the anti-apartheid movement.  Amazing…thank you broblog!  Here I was thinking it was just a cool song to get the weekend going with.

The Paragons - "Happy Go Lucky Girl"

Welcome to full on summer!  These guys (The Paragons) were best known for the song “The Tide Is High” later covered by Blondie.  There is nothing I’d rather listen to as I reclaim my neglected back yard.  You’re wwwelcome!

Wilson Pickett - "Mini Skirt Minnie"

I’m BACK!!  My buddy Sean (Claude Money) turned me onto this track last time we DJed Soul-le-lu-jah together.  It’s a scorcher!!  I’ve had it in my head for 3 weeks straight.
