Deck clearing sequence initiated - Phase one: Syl Johnson.
Syl started out singing and playing the blues, with the likes of Howlin’ Wolf, in the 50’s. The 60’s found him up north recording for King Records, before he went on to make hits and produce for Twinight Records. He’s known for tracks like “Different Strokes” (sampled by Wu-Tang and the Geto Boys), “Is It Because I’m Black”, and “I Hear The Love Chimes” - all of which I believe were included on the “Shaolin Soul” bootleg.
In 1971 Willie Mitchell brought Syl to Hi Records (best known as Al Green’s label) which is where this track was recorded. It’s so nice to hear Syl laying down his amazing vocals over the Hi House Band. Possibly the greatest “take me back” love song ever recorded - luckily he’s never done me wrong, so I don’t have to.
Please kick back and enjoy…
